IBM i Technical Consulting & Education
From Brian Kelly: A Letter to Prospective Clients

Dear Sir or Madame.
Kelly Consulting is a small firm with one employee but I often contract out parts of a bigger job -- design, programming, and/or education if required. Most of the time, I do the work myself.
My typical engagements have involved some level of technical systems programming.
For example, I helped companies move from one release of the IBM i OS to another. I help them use conversion tools to move from non-IBM to IBM code. I help them to migrate from System/38 or System/36 to AS/400 (IBM i).
I also have built systems applications to solve specific needs of clients. For example, I designed and programmed and implemented a security system using CL and RPGIV so that one of my clients could add additional security controls to either prohibit certain security officers from performing certain functions or logging and sending messages to management when they attempted to do something that was not in their job d.
I also designed and programmed a system that enabled transactions to be entered into an existing application from the engineering department using MS access. I used both , "At EOF" facilties as well as database triggers to assure that the foreign transactions went through the same edits as the green screen code without having to touch the original application and without requiring the source code for the original application.
I designed and wrote the code for a UPS system to intelligently control the shutdown of the IBM i system in the event of a lightening hit.
I still provide the types of services above as well as business application design, business programming, Web design, and Web setup on IBM i.
My rate for systems programming is $95.00 per hour. This has been my normal consulting rate for several years now, regardless of the type of work.
This rate also applied to hours and days traveling to and from a work site that is remote from my office.
I have worked on business applications written in CL and RPG/RPGIV, and limited COBOL over the years. I have taken on projects or helped IT shop personnel change application code to add or modify functions. In the past all of these situations were performed at my normal rate applied.
However, application programming is typically easier than systems programming or systems design.
I Have been asked by clients recently if there were projects in the shop that did not require systems and specialty design expertise, but were application programming, would I be willing to charge a lower rate. I have thought this over and my rate for such projects would be $70.00 per hour.
Feel free to contact me at your convenience.
BTW, I have written a number of articles for IT Jungle (www.itjungle.com) and I have written forty-nine books, most of which are on IBM i topics. These AS/400 / IBM i books are available for sale on the www.bookhawkers.com site.
I look forward to hearing from you.

IT Jungle:
Setting Up A PHP/Web Environment On System i: Where Do I Start?
Check out www.itjungle.com for a plethora of IBM i articles by Brian Kelly and other leading IBM i authors.
This is the first in a series of four articles by Brian Kelly on PHP.
Hey, Brian:
Our company has been following your sometimes promising, sometimes depressing, articles and responses regarding a natural modern interface to the System i and RPG. If IBM wants to build these interfaces for its other platforms, that's fine too, but I don't really care about those--at least right now. Though I would like the "Good Brian" to be correct in his opinion of the IBM reorganization (see IBM's Reorg: The Good Me or the Bad Me?), what I have seen from IBM leads me to believe that the "Bad Brian" got this one right. Since I am not sure to whom at IT Jungle to write my questions on this topic, and since your articles inspired the thought behind these questions, I am writing to you. I hope the "Good Brian" can give me some guidance.
What's New for the Joomla CMS?

As with previous releases, Joomla! provides a unified and easy-to-use framework for delivering content for Web sites of all kinds. To support the changing nature of the Internet and emerging Web technologies, Joomla! required substantial restructuring of its core functionality and we also used this effort to simplify many challenges within the current user interface.
Joomla! 1.5 added many new features. Joomla 1.6 was developed as a major change. It took three years to complete. Since then, the Joomla Team has been adding function on a semi-annual to annual basis. Joomla 1.7 moved to J2.5, and then to J3.x. Currently the stable release is Joomla 3.1.5. This site is running on Joomla 3.1.5.
On August 1st, 2013, The Joomla Project announced the immediate availability of Joomla 3.1.5. This is a security release addressing a critical level security issue. The Production Leadership Team's goal is to continue to provide regular, frequent updates to the Joomla community. You may learn lots more about Joomla! development at the Joomla site. Besides that, Brian Kelly has written seven books about Joomla and these are available for pruchase at www.letsgopublish.com and www.bookhawkers.com
For those with an old Joomla release, the update process is much more simple. Complete instructions are available here. Note that there are now easier and better ways of updating than copying the files with FTP.
Joomla 3.1.5 is the latest version as Joomla is getting more and more powerful. It works on all systems that support PHP and MySQL.

Hey, Brian:
I followed your directions explicitly regarding your instructions to me as to how to install WebSphere Application Server 6.0 on our new i5. I must admit that the process was so foreign to me that I had no clue as to what was happening, but by following your directions it all seemed to work. But I still have a problem.
