| AS005A | AS/400 Concepts & Facilities |
||
Prerequisites: |
None | ||
| Audience: | MIS Directors, Programmers, Supervisors and selected Advanced End-Users | ||
| Duration: | Half a day | ||
This course is a must for new and prospective AS/400 users. It is also the ideal course for an Executive, in this age of downsizing/rightsizing, to gain the knowledge necessary to make an informed system or network decision. Most MIS Directors have forgotten why they chose the AS/400 in the first place since their focus is typically on getting the job done. This course can be used to strengthen and capsulize a MIS Director's knowledge about the AS/400 to be better prepared for a PC Comparison. In this introductory module, the AS/400 is revealed as the end result of the IBM Future Systems Project. The AS/400 is such a comprehensive machine that it takes all of the two-and-one-half hours to gain an appreciation for what this remarkable system is all about. In addition to a general overview, topics include Advanced Architecture Characteristics, Addressability, Single Level Storage, Integrated Database, System Integrity, Communications Facilities, PC Integration, and Productivity Features.

| AS005B | AS/400 Concepts & Facilities - Application Development Demonstration |
||
Prerequisites: |
AS005A | ||
| Audience: | MIS Directors, Programmers, Supervisors and selected Advanced End-Users | ||
| Duration: | Half a day | ||
Live, student paced demonstration of application development facilities. This shows the Application DevelopmentTools at work with the end product being a functional interactive RPG program, invaluable to the novice or neophyte, and a great perspective for management.

| AS011 | AS/400 Query, DFU, End User Tools |
||
Prerequisites: |
None | ||
| Audience: | AS/400 Advanced End-Users, Supervisors and Programmers | ||
| Duration: | Half a day or 1 day (with optional labs) | ||
| Home Labs: | Two | ||
This course introduces the AS/400 as an end-user machine with strong database and query tools. These tools which are found on almost all AS/400s can be used by Advanced End-Users (those capable of using PC data base products) and Programmers in much the same fashion as popular PC database programs such as Paradox and Access without the systems management headaches of a multi-computer environment. Topics include Architecture, Libraries, DFU, Query/400.

| AS012 | AS/400 Application Development Tools |
||
Prerequisites: |
None | ||
| Audience: | New AS/400 Programmers, Supervisors and selected Advanced End-Users | ||
| Duration: | Half a day or 1 day (with optional labs) | ||
| Home Labs: | Four | ||
This course teaches the new AS/400 Programmer or the AS/400 Supervisor, or selected Advanced End-Users the programmer tools necessary to build source code and display panels using the AS/400 utilities: Program Development Manager (PDM), Source Entry Utility (SEU), and Screen Design Aid (SDA). Students are introduced to the tools necessary to be able to enter data structures for physical and logical files, create menus, design screens for programs, and navigate through system objects using the list manager. This class also includes a brief introduction to the AS/400 CL language for a better overall system understanding. Additionally, the 1994/1995 repackaging and renaming of the tools (ADTS) is discussed along with the general functions of the new facilities - Dictionary Services, Development Manager, Code/400, File Compare etc.

| AS015 | AS/400 DB2/400 Database Design, and DDS Coding |
||
Prerequisites: |
AS013 or equivalent knowledge | ||
| Audience: | MIS Directors & Programmers, Supervisors and selected Advanced End-Users | ||
| Duration: | 1.5 days or 2.5 days (with optional labs) | ||
This course introduces the student to the notion of databases per se; explains the AS/400 database manager, and then moves the student through a series of DDS coding examples for physical and logical files, and elementary screen display files. New and experienced AS/400 personnel will benefit from this course. New personnel will learn to be able to design records and be able code in the native AS/400 DB/2 database language - Experienced AS/400 Programmers will benefit by learning how to design database structures for performance and/or End-User purposes. They will also be introduced to all of the supported database functions and the DDS keywords and examples to code the relational operators. Most experienced AS/400 Programmers do well on the AS/400 by knowing a small percentage of the system's capabilities. Better database knowledge can provide both application design and maintenance benefits. It can also serve as the basis for better End-User accessible record designs so that Client/Server functions can be accommodated. A database refresher will definitely help in understanding the new database features such as Triggers, Referential Integrity etc.

| AS110L | RPG/400 - Soup to Nuts - RPGII through RPG/400 |
||
Prerequisites: |
AS 010, or equivalent. | ||
| Audience: | Non-AS/400 Programmers, other Language Programmers, new or experienced AS/400 Programmers, Supervisors and selected Advanced End-Users | ||
| Duration: | 5 days | ||
This five-day umbrella course takes a highly computer literate programmer or programmer candidate from little or no knowledge of RPG to an understanding of the RPG cycle, External operations, RPG structured operations, subfiles, and RPG Advanced operations such as tables, arrays, and strings - to be able to attack new RPG/400 projects and/ or maintain existing RPG/400 code This is the ideal course for a programmer coming from scratch, another system or computer language to gain immediately usable capabilities in the RPG/400 language. This offering is comprised of the three QuikCourses described below: course codes - AS111, AS112, and AS113B. See these course descriptions for further details. IN addition to the standard course material two-days worth of hands-on lab exercises help prepare the student for live action upon completion of this course. In certain boot-camps, AS113A is also included.

| AS177 | CL Programming Workshop |
||
Prerequisites: |
AS011, or equivalent. | ||
| Audience: | AS/400 Programmers, MIS Directors, Supervisors and selected Advanced End-Users | ||
| Duration: | 4.5 days (it can be completed in 3 days without labs, but this isn't recommended) | ||
This course introduces the AS/400 Command Language and CL Programming facilities. CL is a PL/1 derivative which serves as the operation/job control language for the AS/400. Unlike predecessor JCL or OCL processors, CL is a bona fide programming language though limited in its I/O subset. This course introduces the notions of CL variables, CL processed display files, Menus, Messages, CL processed database files, If Statements, Do statements, String functions etc. This is an example driven course. The student will also learn how to create user commands and command processing programs to provide consistent easy-to-use facilities in support of your AS/400 shop. The CL Programming examples can serve as building blocks to your own CL implementations. By the end of this course the student will have a knowledge of the power of CL, will be able to read reasonably complex CL Programs, and be able to begin to write new and maintain existing CL programs.
